Roundabouts are circular intersections designed to reduce crashes, delays and speeds. Traffic flows counterclockwise, and vehicles already in the circle have the right-of-way.

Roundabout navigation steps (left/straight/right/U-turn)
Driving through a roundabout

Four steps through a Montana roundabout

  • Slow down: driving speeds in roundabouts are 15 mph or less
  • Look to the left: yield to vehicles already in the roundabout; traffic flows counterclockwise
  • Stay right of the center island; don't stop if the way is clear
  • Never pass or overtake another vehicle after entering a single-lane roundabout
  • Go around until you reach your street, then signal right and exit

15 mph

Top driving speed in a roundabout

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Know the rule

When entering and exiting, watch for and yield to pedestrians in or waiting at the crosswalk. Pedestrians must use the crosswalks and never cross to the central island.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Truck apron

The gradually sloped, flat curb around the center island of a single-lane roundabout. The rear wheels of a large vehicle ride over it.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Know the rule

Give large vehicles room: drop back behind a large truck as it travels through the roundabout.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Know the rule

Bicyclists are encouraged to walk their bikes on sidewalks and use crosswalks; confident riders may ride in the circle like a car, obeying the same rules and signaling turns.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Know the rule

If an emergency vehicle comes while you're in the roundabout, don't pull over or stop — exit normally, then pull right. If you're approaching, pull over if there's room; if not, go through and pull over after exiting.

Handbook p. 42 ↗

Put it into practice

You're halfway around a roundabout when you hear a siren behind you. Don't stop in the circle. Continue to your exit, leave the roundabout, then pull to the right so the emergency vehicle can pass.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

How fast should you generally drive within a Montana roundabout?
  1. 15 mph or less
  2. 25 mph or less
  3. 35 mph or less
  4. 10 mph or less

Answer: 15 mph or less

Driving speeds within roundabouts should be 15 mph or less.

Handbook p. 42 ↗
Which direction does traffic flow in a Montana roundabout?
  1. Clockwise
  2. Counterclockwise
  3. Either direction depending on lane
  4. It varies by roundabout size

Answer: Counterclockwise

Traffic in a roundabout flows counterclockwise, and you yield to vehicles already in the circle.

Handbook p. 42 ↗
When entering a roundabout, who has the right-of-way?
  1. Whoever arrives first at the entrance
  2. The vehicle to your right at the entry
  3. Vehicles already in the roundabout
  4. Larger vehicles always have priority

Answer: Vehicles already in the roundabout

Vehicles already in the roundabout have the right-of-way; entering traffic must yield to them.

Handbook p. 42 ↗
A large truck is navigating a single-lane roundabout and its rear wheels cross the truck apron. What should you do as a smaller vehicle behind it?
  1. Pass the truck on the apron
  2. Pull alongside the truck to pass
  3. Stop in the roundabout to give it room
  4. Drop back and let the truck finish its path

Answer: Drop back and let the truck finish its path

Smaller vehicles should drop back behind a large truck using the truck apron so it can complete the roundabout safely.

Handbook p. 42 ↗
You are approaching a roundabout when an emergency vehicle comes up behind you with its lights on, but there's no room to pull over. What should you do?
  1. Continue through, then pull over after exiting
  2. Stop at the entry line and wait
  3. Pull over inside the roundabout
  4. Drive faster to exit before it catches up

Answer: Continue through, then pull over after exiting

If there isn't room to pull over before entering, continue through and exit the roundabout, then pull over.

Handbook p. 42 ↗
In a roundabout, you should never pass or overtake another vehicle once you have entered a single-lane roundabout.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

Passing is prohibited inside a single-lane roundabout once you have entered it.
