More accidents happen at intersections than anywhere else, often because drivers fail to communicate or take an unnecessary chance when turning. A safe turn is planned: know your route, signal, get into the right lane early, then turn smoothly.

Six guidelines for a safe turn:

  • 1. Know where you want to turn; if unsure, drive slowly and read the signs. Avoid last-minute turns
  • 2. Signal what you intend to do, giving pedestrians and drivers advance notice
  • 3. Get into the correct lane as soon as possible
  • 4. Look in all directions before changing lanes or turning; don't assume others see you
  • 5. Slow down well before the crosswalk; keep your wheels straight until the turn starts
  • 6. Stay in your lane throughout the turn and finish in the proper lane

Know the rule

Complete the turn at a consistent speed. Don't push down on the brake or clutch while turning, and don't shift gears while entering the intersection.

Know the rule

If traffic is blocked ahead as you approach an intersection, stop before reaching the crosswalk and wait for traffic to move.

Sometimes you'll need to turn your car around in a confined space. The handbook's method uses forward and backward moves, repeated until you're facing the other way.

Turning around in a confined space:

  • 1. From the extreme right side, signal and turn the wheel sharply left while inching forward
  • 2. Wheels fully left, drive slowly to within a few inches of the left curb or road edge
  • 3. Turn sharply right while inching backward; back slowly to within a few inches of the curb
  • 4. Turn your wheels left and pull forward. Repeat as needed until the turn is complete

Put it into practice

You realize at the last moment that you're passing the street you wanted. Don't swerve into it. Continue on, then plan the next turn: signal early, get into the correct lane, slow down before the crosswalk and turn at a steady speed.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

When making a three-point turn to reverse direction, where do you start from?
  1. The extreme right side of the road
  2. The extreme left side of the road
  3. The center of the road
  4. A parking lane only

Answer: The extreme right side of the road

The turn-around procedure begins from the extreme right side of the road.

Handbook p. 49 ↗
While actually turning through an intersection, what should you avoid doing?
  1. Looking in the direction you're turning
  2. Signaling before the turn
  3. Shifting gears or pressing the brake or clutch
  4. Checking your mirrors

Answer: Shifting gears or pressing the brake or clutch

Do not shift gears or push down on the brake or clutch while you are turning through the intersection.

Handbook p. 50 ↗
Approaching an intersection, you see that traffic ahead is completely blocked. What should you do?
  1. Proceed into the intersection and wait there
  2. Stop before the crosswalk and wait for traffic to move
  3. Stop in the crosswalk until traffic moves
  4. Go around on the shoulder

Answer: Stop before the crosswalk and wait for traffic to move

If traffic is blocked ahead, stop before reaching the crosswalk and wait rather than entering the intersection.

Handbook p. 50 ↗
What is the second step in the handbook's process for making a safe turn at an intersection?
  1. Signal what you intend to do
  2. Get into the correct lane
  3. Look around you in all directions
  4. Slow down before the crosswalk

Answer: Signal what you intend to do

After knowing where you want to turn, the second step is to signal your intentions to other drivers and pedestrians.

Handbook p. 50 ↗
When performing a three-point turn-around, what do you do after turning the wheels completely to the left?
  1. Accelerate quickly to complete the turn
  2. Drive slowly forward to within a few inches of the left curb or edge
  3. Immediately shift into reverse without moving forward
  4. Turn the wheels back to center before moving

Answer: Drive slowly forward to within a few inches of the left curb or edge

After turning the wheels fully left, you drive slowly forward to within a few inches of the left curb or road edge.

Handbook p. 49 ↗
It is safe to shift gears while your vehicle is actively turning through an intersection.
  1. True
  2. False

Answer: False
