Before any test or card, DVS checks who you are. Your documents must prove your full name and date of birth, and a REAL ID or enhanced card needs more proof than a standard one.

Know the rule

To take the written and road tests you must show identification verifying your first, middle and last name and your date of birth. If names don't match across documents, bring proof of each legal name change.

Handbook p. 10 ↗

Know the rule

DVS will not accept photocopies, may reject laminated or altered documents, and may confiscate fraudulent ones.

Handbook p. 10 ↗

Standard license or ID — acceptable proof

  • A Minnesota license, ID or permit that is current or expired 5 years or less, if it has a photo
  • The same card expired 1 year or less, if it has no photo
  • Otherwise two documents (primary and secondary); one must show full name and date of birth
  • Examples: birth certificate, passport or Social Security card
  • Proof of legal name change(s) if your name has changed or documents don't match
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Driver's License for All

Since Oct. 1, 2023, you can get a standard license, learner's permit or state ID regardless of immigration status; proof of legal presence in the U.S. is not needed.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

REAL ID (apply in person)

  • One document proving identity, date of birth and legal presence in the United States
  • A name change document if that document shows a different name
  • You must know your Social Security number
  • Two documents proving your current Minnesota residency
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Enhanced license or ID

  • Only for U.S. citizens who prove identity, full legal name, SSN, photo identity and MN residency
  • Two types of residency documents, such as an electric or phone bill and a tax return
  • Must list your Minnesota residence address
  • You complete an interview questionnaire when you apply
  • A $15 fee on top of the license or ID fee
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

For a name change through marriage, divorce or court order, show a certified marriage certificate, certified court order or certified divorce decree — and documents for every change if you've had several.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

A translator of non-English documents must certify that:

  • The document comes with a full English translation
  • The translation is true and accurate — every word correctly translated
  • The translator is not related by blood or marriage to the person in the document
  • The translator is competent to translate the original language into English
  • The translator understands an intentionally false translation brings penalties
Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

You must give your Social Security number on the application if you have one; if you've never been issued one, check the box. SSNs are not printed on or embedded in cards. If you're eligible and don't provide it, DVS can't process your application.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

If you're serving a sentence longer than six months in a jail or correctional facility without a DVS agreement, you can renew your license or ID by mail.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Reintegration license

A temporary license for eligible people released from prison in Minnesota, issued without paying outstanding fines or reinstatement fees. It expires 15 months after issue.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Put it into practice

Your birth certificate says Maria Lopez, but you're now Maria Chen after marrying. Bring your certified marriage certificate along with your ID documents — a photocopy will be refused.
