This lesson rounds out licensing: the motorcycle permit, who must take a road test and what it includes, how health conditions are handled, and the probation every new driver starts on.
How long a motorcycle TIP is valid; only two are issued to a rider in a 10-year period
Handbook p. 22 ↗To apply for a motorcycle TIP you must:
- Be at least age 16
- Hold a valid Michigan driver's license
- Pass the vision test and motorcycle knowledge test
- Pay the TIP fee
Know the rule
On a motorcycle TIP you must ride under the constant visual supervision of a licensed motorcycle operator at least 18. You may not ride at night or carry passengers. The TIP is not a substitute for an endorsement.
Handbook p. 22 ↗You must take a driving skills test if:
- You're applying for a Level 2 Intermediate License
- You're 18 or older, never licensed, and applying for an original license
- Your last license has been expired for more than four years
- Your license is from a country other than Canada, Germany or South Korea
Know the rule
Drivers 18+ must get a TIP before the skills test; a 30-day practice period may be required. Tests are given by independent driver testing businesses; the Secretary of State does not set their fees.
Handbook p. 22 ↗Know the rule
Hard-of-hearing or non-fluent applicants may use an interpreter on the skills test (not on CDL tests). The interpreter shows photo ID and may only interpret the examiner's instructions.
Handbook p. 22 ↗Know the rule
The skills test starts with off-street, closed-course maneuvers, then an on-road test covering urban, expressway, rural highway and residential driving.
Handbook p. 23 ↗Know the rule
A Physician's Statement of Examination may be required for any condition that may affect safe driving, or if you've had a fainting spell, blackout, seizure or loss of consciousness in the preceding six months.
Handbook p. 23 ↗Chauffeur's or CDL holders: no blackouts, fainting spells or seizures within this period
Handbook p. 23 ↗Know the rule
A serious condition on a physician's statement at renewal means a driver reexamination. A restricted license issued for a disability may require periodic reexaminations.
Handbook p. 23 ↗Minimum probation for all new drivers, including GDL teens
Handbook p. 23 ↗Probationary license program
A program separate from GDL that lets the Secretary of State monitor new drivers for at least three years and encourage them to reduce crash risk.
Handbook p. 23 ↗Put it into practice
You're 16 with a new motorcycle TIP. Your 17-year-old cousin has a motorcycle endorsement and offers to supervise an evening ride. You can't go: your supervisor must be at least 18, and TIP riders can't ride at night.
