A 3-minute lesson from the Michigan course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Level 2 is the first license that lets you drive without a supervisor. It comes with two big limits — no late-night driving and a cap on young passengers — plus a phone ban. Each limit has specific exceptions you need to know.
Know the rule
To apply for Level 2 you must be at least 16, have held Level 1 for at least 6 months, and have no violations, at-fault crashes or suspensions on your record for the 90 days before you apply.
Hard-card Level 1 teens who meet the requirements and pass the skills test advance to Level 2 automatically. Paper Level 1 holders must visit an office with their Level 1 license, Segment 2 certificate, Driving Skills Test Certificate and identity/residency documents.
Under Kelsey's Law, Level 2 drivers may not use a phone while driving except for emergencies. Violators can face a civil infraction with fines and/or community service.
At 11 p.m. you drive home alone from your shift at a grocery store. That's allowed: driving to or from work is an exception to the 10 p.m.–5 a.m. rule. Driving two non-family friends (both 17) to a movie with no adult is not allowed.
