Massachusetts driving lesson · Getting Your License
The Learner's Permit Exam
A 3-minute lesson from the Massachusetts course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
The permit exam checks that you know Massachusetts motor vehicle laws and safe driving practices. Besides rules of the road and road signs, it covers alcohol misuse, suspensions and Junior Operator violations, so study every unit.
You can take the exam on the automated testing stations (ATS) at an RMV Full Service Center when you submit your application, or online at Mass.Gov/RMV after visiting a service center.
Class D and M permit exams are offered in many languages, including American Sign Language. Class A, B and C (CDL) permit exams are only available in English.
Anyone may choose an audio exam: no appointment or extra documents needed. It's available in all the listed languages for Class D and M and in English only for CDL. Bring your own headphones; every ATS has a headphone splitter.
To request an accommodation or interpreter, call 857-368-8105 and leave your name, phone number, request and preferred service center. You may be asked for documentation supporting a disability-related request.
You bring your phone into the testing area just to check the time. Using any electronic device counts as cheating: you fail, and if found responsible you can't hold any license or permit for 60 days. Leave it outside.
