Massachusetts driving lesson · Getting Your License
Scheduling & Preparing for the Road Test
A 4-minute lesson from the Massachusetts course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
The road test with an RMV examiner is the last step to your license. You need a learner's permit of the proper class to schedule it, and strict rules govern attempts, fees and what you must bring.

Maximum Class D road tests you may attempt in a 12-month period
Class M: completing the Massachusetts Rider Education Program (MREP) course replaces the RMV road test. Fail two Class M road tests and you must complete a beginner rider course before scheduling another. Under 18, the MREP basic rider course is required for Class M.
If the Governor declares a state of emergency (statewide or for your region), or the examiner cancels for unsafe weather, you may reschedule at no additional fee.
Under 18, you need a clean record for the six consecutive months before you apply: no surchargeable incidents (at-fault crashes, moving violations), no permit suspension for drug or alcohol violations, and no drug or alcohol convictions.
If the RMV learns of an event that breaks your six clean months between booking and test day, you can't test as scheduled. You'll need a new six-month clean record unless you turn 18 first.
No sponsor, no Class D road test, even if you hold a valid foreign license. A sponsor may not sponsor more than three different applicants in one year without RMV Road Test Program approval. Class M road tests need no sponsor.
Your road test is Friday at 10 a.m., and on Wednesday afternoon you reschedule. That's less than 72 hours' notice, so you still owe the road test fee before you can book again.
