Massachusetts driving lesson · Getting Your License
Driving With Your Permit
A 3-minute lesson from the Massachusetts course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
A permit grants conditional driving privileges. Follow its limits every time you drive, and carry the permit until you earn a Junior Operator's License or a full driver's license.
Class D permit: you must be accompanied by a driver who:
Sits in the front passenger seat next to you
Is at least 21 years old
Holds a valid driver's license from Massachusetts or another state
Under 18 with a Class D permit, you may not drive between 12:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is a licensed operator with at least one year of driving experience.
The RMV requires drivers under 18 to take professional driving lessons at a local high school or driver school. Every driver school, public or private, must be licensed and monitored by the RMV; if in doubt, ask to see its RMV license certificate.
Moved here after finishing driver's ed in another state? File an Application to Convert Out-of-State Driver Education Certificate. If that state's requirements meet or exceed Massachusetts' minimums, a new certificate is filed and you can book your road test.
You're 17 with a Class D permit, and your 19-year-old licensed cousin offers to ride along. Not allowed: your supervising driver must be at least 21, have a year of experience, and sit in the seat next to you.
