Children need restraints sized for their bodies. Massachusetts requires a federally approved child seat until a child is old enough or tall enough for a regular belt, and air bags make where the child sits critical.

Know the rule

Infants and small children must ride in a federally approved child passenger restraint until they are at least eight years old OR at least 57 inches tall. After that, they must wear safety belts, used correctly.

Handbook p. 44 ↗

Know the rule

The safest place for a child is the back seat, and the back middle seat is best. Infant seats must face the back of the vehicle.

Handbook p. 44 ↗

Know the rule

Never put a back-facing child safety seat in the front passenger seat if that seat has an air bag.

Handbook p. 44 ↗

Air-bag safety:

  • Children are always safest riding in the back seat
  • Infants and young children belong in child seats right for their age and size
  • Air bags don't replace safety belts: always wear lap and shoulder belts
  • Move the driver's and front passenger seats as far back from the dashboard as you can

Know the rule

For help installing a seat, a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician can be found at 1-877-392-5956 or Mass.Gov/Highwaysafety.

Put it into practice

Your nephew is 7 years old and 58 inches tall. Because he's at least 57 inches tall, he no longer needs a child restraint, but he must wear the regular safety belt correctly.
