A license from another country doesn't transfer automatically. You test like a new driver and take a short safety course. The MVA also offers language help and disability accommodations.

With a license from another country you must complete:

  • A vision screening
  • A knowledge test
  • A driving skills test
  • A three-hour roadway safety driving education program approved by the MVA
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Know the rule

If your foreign license is not in English, you must also have an International License or have your license translated into English.

Handbook p. 11 ↗

Translations must be on the letterhead of, and prepared by:

  • An MVA-approved provider or court translator, OR
  • The embassy of the country of origin
Handbook p. 11 ↗

Translations must contain the translator's:

  • Typed/printed name
  • Telephone number
  • Signature
Handbook p. 12 ↗
5 times

Times you must take the knowledge test in your language (if offered) before you may use an interpreter

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

The MVA charges no fee for using an interpreter, but you pay the interpreter. Interpreters must show a valid photo ID (a state driver's license or ID card), and staff confirm they are on the approved list.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

An interpreter for your knowledge or skills test may not provide you other services, such as certifying residence, running a driving school, or issuing lease/rental agreements.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Test accommodations for customers with disabilities include:

  • Additional time for test taking
  • Sign language support (ASL and Certified Deaf Interpreters)
  • Oral testing
  • Screen readers
  • Headphones
  • Visual aids
Handbook p. 12 ↗

Developmental Disability Disclosure Card

A voluntary blue, license-sized card you may carry with your license to tell law enforcement about your disability and how best to communicate with you.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Know the rule

You or your parent or guardian can get the card at the information desk of any MVA location. The MVA will NOT ask for information or documents about your disability to issue it.

Handbook p. 12 ↗

Put it into practice

Your license is from Brazil and written in Portuguese. You'll take the vision, knowledge and skills tests and the 3-hour course, and bring either an International License or an approved English translation signed by the translator.
