A 4-minute lesson from the Indiana course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Credentials expire, and life changes. Renew on time to avoid penalties and extra tests, and tell the BMV within 30 days when your name or address changes.
Know the rule
A probationary license expires when you turn 21 years and 30 days, and it can be renewed online if you qualify. All other credentials expire at midnight on your birthday.
If eligible, you can renew or replace online at myBMV.com when your name and residential address haven't changed. Online or kiosk renewal is allowed every other renewal.
If you're temporarily outside Indiana because of armed forces service, your license stays valid for 90 days after discharge, after post-deployment, or once you no longer live outside Indiana for service.
If your license is expired after discharge, bring Department of Defense proof of discharge or your long form DD 214 to a branch; you may add a veteran indicator then.
To change your principal (legal) address, visit a branch with Appendix A documents. Mailing address changes can be made online at myBMV.com, at a BMV Connect kiosk, or at a branch.
Replace a lost or stolen credential at myBMV.com or a BMV Connect kiosk if your name and residential address are unchanged, up to 10 times online before a branch visit is required.
You married and changed your last name on June 1. Update your name with the Social Security Administration, wait at least one business day, then visit a BMV branch with your documents within 30 days of the change.
