A 3-minute lesson from the Indiana course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Chapter 1 also covers who can get a commercial license, when a photo can be waived, how your card reaches you, and two public safety laws that bind every driver.
Know the rule
You must be at least 18 to apply for a commercial learner's permit (CLP) or a commercial driver's license (CDL).
Even with a photo exemption, the BMV captures a photo and keeps it on file. To remove the exemption, visit a branch for a photo on a renewed or amended credential.
Credentials are mailed from a secure central location only to the address on file and are not forwarded. If you changed your address with USPS, update it with the BMV or your card won't be delivered.
You may not type, send, or read a text or email on a telecommunications device while driving a moving vehicle, unless using hands-free or voice-operated technology or calling 911.
An electronic or digital device such as a wireless phone, PDA, pager, or texting device. Excludes licensed CB radios and systems in commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs.
You moved across town and filed a change of address with the post office, but not with the BMV. Your renewed license is mailed to your old address and won't be forwarded. Update your address with the BMV first.
