Indiana's Point Study Committee gives each violation a point value based on how serious it is and on its history. Points build up on your record, and too many can mean a retest, a required safety course, or worse.

If you're at least 21 and have six or more active points, you must pass the knowledge exam to renew your license.

Driver Safety Program (DSP)

A BMV-approved defensive driving course offered in classroom, online, or DVD formats. It summarizes defensive driving techniques.

Handbook p. 26 ↗

Know the rule

Any Indiana driver may complete a BMV-approved DSP and receive a four-point credit, but each driver gets only one four-point credit in a three-year period.

Handbook p. 26 ↗

Know the rule

The BMV may require a DSP of drivers 21 and older convicted of two or more traffic offenses within 12 months. Drivers under 21 may be required to take one after two or more traffic offenses.

Handbook p. 26 ↗
90 days

Time to complete a BMV-required DSP, counted from the date on the mailed notice

Handbook p. 26 ↗

Know the rule

Missing the 90-day deadline suspends your driving privileges until you complete the course and the BMV processes the completion.

Handbook p. 26 ↗

Know the rule

A judge may order a DSP and choose its type, but the four-point credit applies only for a BMV-approved course. Allow 7 to 10 business days for results to be processed.

Handbook p. 27 ↗

Put it into practice

You're 22. In March you're ticketed for going 18 mph over (4 points), and in October for unsafe lane movement (4 points). With two offenses in 12 months, the BMV may require a DSP. If notified, finish it within 90 days or be suspended.
