Dangerous driving isn't the only thing that can suspend your license. Missed court dates, unpaid child support, or a bounced payment to the BMV can too. Drunk driving brings the fastest suspensions of all.
Know the rule
Failing to appear in court for a citation, or not paying a ticket after judgment, may suspend your privileges. The court tells the BMV to close it once you appear or pay; keeping an SR22 on file can stay it.
A court may also suspend you after an OWI conviction, with longer suspensions for repeat offenders. It may grant specialized driving privileges or require an ignition interlock device.
A watercraft OWI conviction carries the same penalties as a vehicle OWI and goes on your driver record, as do reckless watercraft operation and operating a watercraft while suspended.
A court that finds a parent delinquent on child support may order an immediate suspension. A child support agency may also order one until the parent pays or sets up a payment plan.
A payment to the BMV that isn't honored brings an indefinite suspension. To reinstate, pay the amount plus all service, collection, and reinstatement fees.
You're stopped on suspicion of OWI and refuse the chemical test. With no prior OWI conviction, your license is suspended for one year, twice the 180 days you'd face for failing the test.
