On the Class C/D road test, the examiner scores specific skills. Knowing the exact standards, like how close to the curb to park and how fast to back up, helps you practice the right things.

18 inches

Parallel park no farther than this from the curb, midway between the two standards

Handbook p. 13 ↗
22 ft x 10 ft

Standard parallel parking space used on the test

Handbook p. 13 ↗
About 50 feet

Straight-line backing distance

Handbook p. 13 ↗
10 mph

Maximum speed while backing on the test

Handbook p. 13 ↗

Know the rule

When backing, turn your head and look behind the vehicle, back as straight and smoothly as possible, and don't cross any boundary lines.

Handbook p. 13 ↗

At stop signs and traffic signals:

  • Give the proper hand or brake signal
  • Approach in the proper lane
  • Stop before reaching the pedestrian crosswalk
  • Stay stopped until pedestrians clear the crosswalk on your side of the road
  • Go through the intersection only when it is safe
Handbook p. 13 ↗

Other scored skills:

  • Turn about: turn around in a narrow space using a three-point turn
  • Clutch: with a manual transmission, shift smoothly and correctly
  • Intersections and corners: be in the proper lane and look both ways
  • Right-of-way: stop and stay stopped for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists who enter first
  • Turning: get in the proper lane and signal an adequate distance before the turn
Handbook p. 13 ↗

Know the rule

Passing: check in front of and behind your vehicle so you can pass without interfering with traffic. Following: keep a safe distance so you can handle emergencies and sudden stops.

Handbook p. 14 ↗

Know the rule

Keep both hands on the wheel, don't rest your elbow on the window, and don't chat with the examiner, who is busy giving instructions and scoring.

Handbook p. 14 ↗

Put it into practice

At the parallel parking stop, you end up about 2 feet from the curb. That's more than the 18-inch limit, so adjust the car before telling the examiner you're finished.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

Handbook p. 13 ↗
Which of the following combinations correctly describes the Class C/D road test parking requirement?
  1. 22 ft x 10 ft space, car no more than 3 feet from the curb
  2. 22 ft x 10 ft space, car no more than 18 inches from the curb
  3. 18 ft x 8 ft space, car no more than 18 inches from the curb
