Renewing by mail, new numbers and voter registration
A 3-minute lesson from the Georgia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
If you're out of state when your license expires, for military duty or college, Georgia lets you renew by mail. This lesson also covers why DDS may give you a new document number and how voter registration works at DDS.
Who can renew by mail:
Customers stationed out of state on active military duty, plus spouse and dependents living with them
Full-time students attending school outside Georgia, plus spouse and dependents living with them
Physically incapacitated customers who can't visit a center (ID card only)
No Georgia license or ID card may use your Social Security Number as its document number. If yours matches, a randomly generated number is assigned when your document is issued or renewed.
DDS does not register you to vote. It confidentially sends your information to the Secretary of State, and your county voter registrar completes registration and issues the card.
You're a full-time student at a college in Tennessee and your Georgia license is about to expire. You can renew by mail for 8 years, but you won't get a Real ID that way, and an address change would need an in-person visit.
