Work zones and drawbridges change the road without warning. Orange signs, cones and flaggers guide you through construction. Drawbridges have their own lights and gates for when the span opens for boats.

Know the rule

In construction and maintenance areas, be ready to slow down and use caution when a sign, flagger or officer tells you to. Failing to do so is illegal and endangers workers.

Handbook p. 62 ↗

Know the rule

Construction and maintenance signs, usually diamond-shaped and/or orange, warn of unusual or dangerous conditions near work areas.

Channeling devices

Barricades, vertical panels, drums and cones that warn of dangerous conditions in work zones. Their stripes slope downward in the direction traffic must go.

Flashing arrow panels

Used day and night to give advance warning and direction when you need to move to another lane.

Flagger

A work-zone worker in a bright or fluorescent vest or jacket who uses red flags or signs to stop, slow or guide traffic.

Handbook p. 62 ↗

Know the rule

Speeding fines are doubled in active work zones.

Handbook p. 55 ↗

Drawbridge

A mechanical bridge over navigable water that raises or turns so boats can pass underneath.

Handbook p. 62 ↗

Drawbridge signals

Drawbridge signals
SignalMeaning
RedStop at the marked stop line; bridge operating, road closed

GreenProceed with caution
Flashing yellowBridge in operation; slow down and prepare to stop

Know the rule

Many drawbridges have gates with flashing red lights and bells. Stop when the lights start flashing, before the gate lowers. Driving around or under a gate, whether down or moving, is illegal.

Handbook p. 63 ↗

Put it into practice

Approaching a drawbridge, you see the flashing yellow signal. The bridge is operating. Slow down and prepare to stop at the stop line, and never try to beat the gate.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

Handbook p. 62 ↗

Handbook p. 62 ↗
Flashing arrow panels in a construction zone are used to:
  1. Give advance warning and directional information when drivers must move to another lane
  2. Indicate a bridge closure only
  3. Show maximum speed only
  4. Signal that flaggers are present

Answer: Give advance warning and directional information when drivers must move to another lane

Flashing arrow panels give advance warning and direct drivers when it's necessary to move to another lane.

Handbook p. 62 ↗
At a drawbridge signal, a steady red light means:
  1. Slow down but you may continue
  2. Come to a complete stop at the marked stop line; the bridge is in operation
  3. The bridge is closed permanently
  4. Proceed with caution

Answer: Come to a complete stop at the marked stop line; the bridge is in operation

A red drawbridge signal means stop completely at the marked stop line because the bridge is in operation and closed to traffic.

Handbook p. 62 ↗
A flashing yellow drawbridge signal means:
  1. Only pedestrians must stop
  2. The bridge has reopened
  3. Bridge operating; slow, prepare to stop
  4. Stop only if a gate is lowered

Answer: Bridge operating; slow, prepare to stop

When the yellow light is flashing at a drawbridge, the drawbridge is in operation; slow down and prepare to stop.

Handbook p. 63 ↗
Is it legal to drive around or under a lowering drawbridge or railroad gate?
  1. Yes, if the gate is still rising
  2. Yes, once the lights stop flashing
