Curve signs tell you how the road bends, and every curve sign carries the same advice: slow down and don't pass. Crossing signs tell you who or what may enter the road ahead.

Curve signs (for all: slow down and do not pass):

  • Right Curve: the road curves right
  • Sharp Right Turn: the road makes a sharp right turn
  • Reverse Curve: the road curves right, then left
  • Winding Road: several curves ahead; drive slowly and carefully

Know the rule

Cross Road: a road crosses the main highway ahead; look left and right for traffic. Side Road: a road enters from the direction shown; watch for traffic from that side.

Crossing signs:

  • Bicycle Crossing: a bikeway crosses ahead; watch for bicyclists
  • Emergency Vehicle Crossing: emergency vehicles may enter or cross
  • Truck Crossing: trucks may enter or cross
  • Pedestrian Crossing: watch for people; slow down or stop to yield
  • Animal Crossing: the pictured animal is common here, especially at twilight and night

Put it into practice

At dusk on a rural road you pass a deer crossing sign. Slow down and scan the roadsides. Deer are especially likely to cross at twilight and at night.
