Florida can take away your driving privilege in three ways. A suspension is temporary. A revocation ends the privilege. A cancellation voids the license. Know which offenses lead to which.

Suspension

Temporary withdrawal of your driving privilege.

Handbook p. 38 ↗

Revocation

Termination of your driving privilege.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

Cancellation

Your license is declared void and terminated.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

Your license will be SUSPENDED if you:

  • Make a fraudulent license application, or let your license be used illegally
  • Are convicted in traffic court and the court orders a suspension
  • Refuse a test for alcohol or drugs
  • Misuse a restricted license, or earn too many points
  • Break a traffic law and don't pay the fine or appear in court
  • Fail to pay child support, or fail to carry vehicle insurance
  • Fail to stop for a school bus, or commit retail theft
  • Are not meeting education requirements (school dropout)
Handbook p. 38 ↗

Your license must be REVOKED for:

  • DUI (alcohol, drugs or other controlled substances)
  • A felony in which a motor vehicle is used, or a felony for drug possession
  • Not stopping to help after a crash you're in that causes death or injury
  • Lying about who owns or operates a vehicle
  • Three reckless driving cases within one year
  • An immoral act in which a vehicle was used
  • Three major offenses, or 15 point offenses, within 5 years
  • Vision worse than the minimum standard, or racing on the highway
Handbook p. 39 ↗

Your license can be CANCELED if:

  • It was issued in error
  • You give false information or identification
  • You fail to complete a required school

Put it into practice

A driver is caught racing on the highway. Racing appears on the revocation list, so the privilege is terminated, not just temporarily suspended. Racing also means a mandatory basic driver improvement course.
