Warning signs: intersections, curves & lanes
A 3-minute lesson from the District of Columbia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Most warning signs are black and yellow, and most are diamond-shaped. They warn of what's coming so you can slow down and watch for other signs and signals.
An advisory speed plate, posted under a warning sign, shows the maximum safe speed for that stretch; slow down to it. An Exit Advisory Speed sign shows the maximum safe speed for an entrance or exit.
A yellow diamond with a winding arrow appears, with a 25 mph plate below it. A series of curves is ahead: slow to 25 mph before the first curve, not in the middle of it.
