District of Columbia driving lesson · Points, Violations & Your Record
The points system
A 2-minute lesson from the District of Columbia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
DC tracks your moving violations with points. Each pointable violation adds points to your record, and too many points cost you your license. The number of points depends on the type of violation.
Know the rule
Drivers receive points for certain moving violations whether they happen in the District of Columbia or in other states.
You get a speeding ticket in Maryland and pay it online without contesting it. Paying admits liability, and out-of-state violations count, so DC DMV adds the points. They stay active for two years.
