District of Columbia driving lesson · License Types & the GRAD Program
GRAD violations & suspensions
A 2-minute lesson from the District of Columbia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
GRAD penalties are stricter than regular ones. A violation pushes back your next stage, and breaking a GRAD restriction can suspend your permit or license on top of any other penalty.
Know the rule
If you are under 18, your parent/legal guardian is notified of your GRAD violations at the learner and provisional stages.
Learner stage: any pointable moving violation you admit to, are found liable for, or are convicted of extends your wait for a provisional license. You must be violation-free 6 consecutive months first.
Learner stage: 8 or more points, or violating any GRAD restriction, brings a ninety (90) day suspension of your learner permit plus a reinstatement fee.
Like any other driver, a provisional driver is automatically suspended when the point total reaches 10. After any suspension you must pay a reinstatement fee.
A 16-year-old on a learner permit drives at 10:00 p.m., after the 9:00pm limit. That breaks a GRAD restriction: 90-day permit suspension, a reinstatement fee, and parents are notified.
