Guide and information signs help you find your way and services. Work zones are different: lanes shift, workers are close by and speeding fines double. Orange signs and devices mean construction or maintenance ahead.

Know the rule

Circular flashing beacons may supplement signs. Yellow beacons go with warning and speed limit signs; red beacons go with Stop and Do Not Enter signs. Either color flashes about once per second.

Work zone

An area along a highway where construction, maintenance or utility work is happening. It may be stationary (a bridge being widened) or mobile (pavement striping or patching).

Handbook p. 76 ↗

Know the rule

Work zone signs and devices start before the work area and continue beyond it. Work zone warning signs are usually orange; most are diamond-shaped and a few are rectangular.

Approaching or driving through a work zone:

  • When you see lane-closure signs, prepare to move out of the closed lane
  • Watch for lower speed limits—fines for speeding in a work zone are doubled
  • Don't weave; brake gradually; keep up with the flow of traffic
  • Watch for rough surfaces, metal plates, uneven lanes and edge drop-offs
  • Keep a reasonable speed and spacing—stopped traffic may be hidden by a curve or hill
  • Obey police and flaggers, and be patient with workers

Know the rule

Barricades, drums, cones and tubular markers guide you through; at night they often have flashing or steady-burn lights. Flashing arrow panels guide you into lanes and warn that part of the road ahead is closed.

Handbook p. 78 ↗

Know the rule

Flaggers wear yellow-green vests, shirts or jackets and use red flags or STOP/SLOW paddles to stop, slow or guide traffic.

Flagger signals: stop traffic, and proceed with caution

Put it into practice

A flagger ahead of a lane closure holds up the STOP paddle. You stop and wait. When the paddle turns to SLOW, proceed carefully through the work zone at a reduced speed.
