A 3-minute lesson from the Arkansas course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Roadside stops are deadly for officers and workers because traffic passes inches away. Arkansas's Move Over law makes you give them a lane of space, or slow down when you can't.
Know the rule
Move over for police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles using a siren or air horn and a red or blue flashing light: pull to the right edge of the road, or as near to the right as possible.
The law's purpose is to give emergency responders, construction and utility workers, and tow truck operators room to work without being struck by passing traffic.
On a four-lane interstate you see a tow truck with flashing lights on the right shoulder. Check your mirrors and move into the left lane. If traffic blocks you from changing lanes, slow down well below your speed as you pass.
Check your understanding
Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
If it is unsafe to move over for a stopped emergency vehicle, what must a driver do instead?
Reduce speed
Stop completely in the travel lane
Turn on hazard lights and keep your speed
Flash the headlights and proceed
Answer: Reduce speed
When changing lanes isn't safe or possible, the law requires reducing speed as you pass.
