A 3-minute lesson from the Arkansas course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
As a driver you're responsible for anything thrown from your vehicle onto a street or highway. Arkansas, "The Natural State," punishes littering with fines, community service and even license suspension.
Dumping a junk vehicle, old tire or abandoned appliance on a highway right-of-way, public property, or someone else's land: $1,000 fine and 100 hours of community service for a first offense; a Class A misdemeanor after that.
Commercial haulers of trash must cover their load; anyone hauling trash must take reasonable steps to keep it from falling off. Loads of mostly metal needn't be covered if loaded so nothing can fall.
Your passenger tosses a drink cup out the window. Under Arkansas law, litter thrown from a car is presumed to be the driver's doing, so you could face the fine. Keep a trash bag in the car instead.
