When a police car, fire engine or ambulance approaches with a siren or lights, clear the way. Arizona's Move Over Law also protects anyone stopped beside the road with flashing lights — including tow trucks and ordinary cars.

Know the rule

When an emergency vehicle approaches using a siren, lights or other warning device, yield: move to the right side of the road and stop until it has passed.

Handbook p. 38 ↗

Know the rule

On a four-lane highway with at least two lanes going the emergency vehicle's direction, yield by changing into a lane not adjacent to it. If that's impossible or unsafe, proceed with caution and reduce speed.

Move Over Law (ARS 28-775)

Move over one lane when passing any vehicle pulled to the side with flashing lights. If you can't do so safely, slow down and use caution.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

The Move Over Law covers vehicles with flashing lights such as:

  • Emergency-response vehicles
  • Law-enforcement vehicles
  • Tow trucks
  • Highway maintenance vehicles
  • Private vehicles
Handbook p. 39 ↗

Know the rule

It applies on all freeways and other multiple-lane highways, and on city roads and streets.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

Know the rule

Yield to any vehicle in a funeral procession led by a funeral escort vehicle flashing a red or blue light.

Handbook p. 39 ↗

Put it into practice

On the freeway you see a tow truck with flashing lights on the right shoulder. Signal and move one lane left. If traffic beside you makes that unsafe, slow down and pass with caution.
