A 3-minute lesson from the Alabama course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Under Alabama law, nearly everyone who drives on public streets must be licensed. Licenses are issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Driver License Division. A few people are exempt, and some newcomers get a short grace period.
Know the rule
Every Alabama resident who operates any motor vehicle must have a driver license. The only exception is a farm tractor or implement of husbandry temporarily on a street or highway.
You move to Alabama from Georgia with a valid Georgia license. You may drive on it for 30 days after becoming a resident. Since it hasn't been expired over one year, you can transfer it without taking the driver examination.
Check your understanding

A holder of an out-of-state license that has been expired for up to three years does not have to pass Alabama's driver examination.
True
False
Answer: False
False. An out-of-state license holder skips the driver examination only if that license has not been expired over one year. The three-year limit in the handbook applies to an expired Alabama license, not an out-of-state one.
