A 3-minute lesson from the Alabama course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
To get licensed you pass a vision screening, a written knowledge test on this manual, and a road skills test with a driver license examiner. Know what to bring, what it costs and what the examiner checks.
Know the rule
If you're restricted to corrective lenses, you must wear them for the road test. If the vision exam shows you need lenses, you'll be required to wear them while driving.
If you fail the vision exam, a licensed eye specialist must examine you and you return the report to the examiner. If it shows you can see well enough to drive safely, you may take the rest of the test.
Written exams are offered in Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese. Oral exams are available for applicants unable to read and comprehend the tests.
Pass the knowledge test for a learner license and the examiner issues it when you pay the fee. Pass the road test for a regular license and it's issued when you pay the fee.
If you appear to have a physical or mental impairment that could affect your driving, you may need a physician's statement and periodic re-examination. Failing to report such conditions could result in license revocation.
You're 16 and arrive for your road test in a rental car with your mom. The examiner checks that your name is on the rental agreement as an additional driver, inspects the brake lights, turn signals and horn, and asks for proof of insurance and registration.
