A 3-minute lesson from the Alabama course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Alabama's minimum driving age is 16, but you can start learning at 15 with a Learner License. It's a Class D license with a "Y" restriction: you may drive only with a qualified licensed driver in the seat beside you.
A Learner License may be suspended or revoked in the same manner and for the same causes as a driver license, and also for violating its terms and conditions.
A 16- or 17-year-old who has held a Learner License (or a comparable license from another state) for six months, or until their 18th birthday, may take the road test.
You must surrender your Learner License at the road test. If you pass, you get a regular license with the "Y" removed for the rest of the four-year period, at no cost.
You got your Learner License at 15 and just turned 16. Your 18-year-old licensed cousin may now supervise you from the passenger seat. Before your birthday, it had to be a licensed Alabama driver 21 or older, or a licensed or certified driving instructor.
