Your number one job behind the wheel is driving. Alabama has two phone laws with separate fines: the Hands-Free Law (effective June 2024) and the texting ban.

Know the rule

Hands-Free Law: physically holding a wireless device is a violation when you're seen crossing in and out of a lane without signaling, swerving, or otherwise driving improperly.

If you use a cell phone:

  • Always assess traffic conditions before calling
  • Know the keypad; use speed dial if possible
  • Place calls when stopped, or have a passenger call
  • Keep the phone within easy reach
  • Use a speaker phone or hands-free device
  • Avoid intense, emotional or complicated conversations
  • Avoid talking in congested traffic or bad weather
  • Pull off the road to dial or finish a conversation

Know the rule

GDL drivers (16, or 17 with a license under 6 months) may not drive while operating any handheld communication device.

Handbook p. 86 ↗

Put it into practice

You're holding your phone to your ear and drift across the lane line without signaling. That's a Hands-Free Law violation: $50 and 1 point for a first conviction. Reading a text instead would be a texting violation: $25 and 2 points.
