Alcohol is a major factor in traffic crashes. It slows you down and dulls your judgment, and impairment starts well before the legal limit. Your age and the vehicle you drive set how much counts as illegal.

.05%

BAC that impairs the driving ability of most people to some degree

Handbook p. 34 ↗
.08%

BAC at which all individuals are definitely impaired, and illegal to drive in Alabama

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Illegal BAC levels

Illegal BAC levels
DriverUnlawful at
Any driver.08% or more
Commercial vehicle operator.04% or more
Under 21 years of age.02% or more
School bus or daycare driver.02% or more
Handbook p. 35 ↗

It's unlawful to drive or be in actual physical control of a vehicle while:

  • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Under a drug's influence to a degree that makes you incapable of driving safely
  • Your blood contains .08% or more alcohol
  • Under the combined influence of alcohol and a drug to a degree that makes you incapable of driving safely
Handbook p. 35 ↗
50%

Approximate share of all fatal crashes each year involving drivers who had been drinking

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

One bottle of beer holds about the same alcohol as an average shot of whiskey or a glass of wine, and has the same effect. It's the amount of alcohol entering your blood that counts.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Why not drink and drive? Alcohol:

  • Is a depressant, not a stimulant
  • Retards judgment and slows reflexes
  • Impairs vision (blurred vision) and causes drowsiness
  • Causes loss of coordination
  • Destroys inhibitions and promotes over-confidence
  • Prevents concentration
Handbook p. 36 ↗

Know the rule

Impairment can occur before legal intoxication. If you feel stimulated, it's only because your inhibitions are lowered.

Handbook p. 35 ↗

Know the rule

A small amount of alcohol affects you more on an empty stomach than with food in your stomach.

Handbook p. 36 ↗

Know the rule

Alcohol is absorbed quickly but leaves slowly. The liver must break it down into water and carbon dioxide, eliminated through the kidneys and lungs. Black coffee, food or a cold shower may wake you but won't sober you.

Handbook p. 36 ↗

Put it into practice

You're 19 and had one beer at a party an hour ago. You feel fine, but your BAC could still be .02% or more, which is illegal for any driver under 21. Only time lowers your BAC, so get a sober ride.
