Insurance, window tint, Move-Over and emergency vehicles
A 3-minute lesson from the Alabama course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
A few more laws come up often on the test: the insurance every vehicle must carry, how dark your windows may be, how to give stopped emergency crews room, and how close you may follow an emergency vehicle.
Know the rule
Mandatory Liability Insurance Law: you may not operate, register or keep a vehicle registered for public roads unless it's covered by a liability policy from an insurer licensed in Alabama.
Passenger cars (sedans, coupes, station wagons): all side and rear windows must let through at least 32 percent of light. SUVs, trucks, vans and RVs: front-seat side windows at 32 percent; darker is allowed behind the driver.
Move-Over Law, four or more lanes: when passing an emergency vehicle stopped with flashing lights, or a wrecker with flashing amber lights, leave the lane closest to it.
On a four-lane highway posted at 65 mph, a trooper is stopped on the right shoulder with lights flashing. Move out of the right lane. If traffic makes that unsafe, slow to 50 mph or less, at least 15 below the limit.
