You can't stop on a dime. Before your foot even reaches the brake, you've spent time seeing the danger and deciding what to do. Big trucks need far more room than cars. Some situations require you to stop every time.

At least 1 second

Time to identify a danger, predict what could happen and decide what to do

Handbook p. 49 ↗
About ¾ second

Time to move your foot from the accelerator to the brake

Handbook p. 49 ↗

Know the rule

Stopping distance after braking depends on your initial speed, brakes, tires, road surface and weather.

Handbook p. 50 ↗

Stopping from 55 mph

Stopping from 55 mph
VehicleTypical distance
Passenger vehicleAbout 130-140 ft (½ a football field)
Heavy vehicle, loaded trailerAbout 190-200 ft (over ⅔ of a field)
Truck with hot brakes, heavy trafficAbout 400 ft (1.5 football fields)
Handbook p. 50 ↗

Total stopping distance

The distance a vehicle travels before it comes to a complete stop, including deciding to stop, reacting, and braking.

Handbook p. 94 ↗

You MUST always stop:

  • Before the crosswalk at all stop signs, red lights and flashing red lights
  • Entering a street from a driveway, alley, building or parking lot, or a business district from a side road
  • When a police officer directs you to; an officer's directions outweigh lights or signs
  • For flashing red lights or crossing gates at a railroad crossing
  • When a flag person signals you at a railroad crossing or construction site
  • For a blind person crossing with a white cane or guide dog
  • If you're involved in a traffic crash in any way
Handbook p. 50 ↗

Know the rule

Stop when meeting or overtaking, from either direction, a stopped school bus with flashing red lights. Don't go until the bus moves or the red lights turn off.

Handbook p. 50 ↗

Know the rule

Exception: you may pass a school bus with flashing red lights only if a physical barrier or separate roadways lie between you and the bus. Use extreme caution and watch for pedestrians.

Put it into practice

On a four-lane road with no median, a school bus coming toward you stops and flashes red lights. You must stop too, even though you're on the other side. Wait until the bus moves or the lights turn off.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

  1. True
  2. False

Answer: True

Handbook p. 50 ↗
About how far does it typically take a passenger vehicle traveling 55 mph to stop?
  1. About 130-140 feet
  2. About 50-60 feet
  3. About 250-300 feet
  4. About 190-200 feet

Answer: About 130-140 feet

A passenger vehicle traveling 55 mph can typically stop in about half the length of a football field, roughly 130-140 feet.

Handbook p. 50 ↗
In heavy traffic, when a truck's brakes may be hot, its stopping distance may double to about how far?
  1. About 130-140 feet
  2. About 190-200 feet
  3. About 400 feet
  4. About 250 feet

Handbook p. 50 ↗
When must you stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights on a two-lane undivided highway?
  1. Only if you are behind the bus
  2. Only if you are meeting it from the opposite direction
  3. From either direction, meeting or overtaking
