When a fire truck, police car or ambulance needs to get by, get out of its way and stop. You must also yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and to blind pedestrians wherever they cross.

Authorized emergency vehicle

Fire, police or ambulance vehicles, or others approved by statute.

Handbook p. 91 ↗

When an emergency vehicle with siren or lights approaches from behind:

  • Pull as close as possible to the right-hand curb or edge of the road and stop
  • Don't stop in an intersection
  • Stay stopped until the emergency vehicle has passed
  • Keep your foot on the brake so its driver knows you're stopped
  • Watch for other emergency vehicles before you move again
Handbook p. 48 ↗

Know the rule

Approaching a roundabout, pull over and let the emergency vehicle pass. If you're already in the roundabout, continue to your exit, leave it, then pull to the right.

Handbook p. 49 ↗

Know the rule

On a highway with two or more lanes, merge into the lane farthest from a parked emergency, municipal, utility, construction or maintenance vehicle with lights flashing, unless an officer directs otherwise.

Handbook p. 49 ↗
20 mph

On a road with one lane each way, slow to at least this much below the limit near a parked emergency vehicle

Handbook p. 49 ↗

Know the rule

The driver and the pedestrian are both responsible for traffic safety.

Handbook p. 49 ↗

You must yield to a pedestrian:

  • In a marked crosswalk on your side of the road, with or without traffic signals
  • When you make a lawful turn on red, after coming to a complete stop
  • Who is blind and carrying a clearly visible white cane or is with a guide dog
Handbook p. 49 ↗

Put it into practice

You're circling a roundabout when an ambulance with lights and siren comes up behind you. Don't stop inside the roundabout. Continue to your exit, leave the roundabout, then pull over to the right so it can pass.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

On a road with one lane in each direction, how much must you slow down when approaching a parked emergency vehicle with lights flashing?
  1. At least 10 mph below the speed limit
  2. At least 20 mph below the speed limit
  3. At least 5 mph below the speed limit
  4. You must come to a complete stop

Answer: At least 20 mph below the speed limit

On roads with only one lane in each direction, you must reduce your speed to at least 20 mph below the speed limit when approaching a parked emergency vehicle (p.49).

Handbook p. 49 ↗
When must a driver yield the right of way to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk?
  1. Whether or not there are traffic control signals present
  2. Only when a traffic signal specifically requires it
  3. Only when the pedestrian has a WALK signal
  4. Only after the pedestrian reaches your lane

Answer: Whether or not there are traffic control signals present

A driver must give the right of way to a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk on their side of the roadway, with or without traffic control signals.

Handbook p. 49 ↗
You are making a lawful turn on a red light. What does the law require regarding pedestrians?
  1. Yield only if a pedestrian is already in your lane
  2. Stop completely, then yield to pedestrians
  3. Slow down and yield without stopping
  4. No need to yield, since the turn is legal

Answer: Stop completely, then yield to pedestrians

Drivers must yield the right of way to a pedestrian when making a lawful turn on a red light, after coming to a complete stop.

Handbook p. 49 ↗
An approaching fire truck with lights and siren is behind you on a two-lane road. What should you do?
  1. Speed up to clear the intersection first
  2. Pull to the left and stop
  3. Pull to the right edge of the roadway and stop
  4. Continue at the same speed until it passes

Answer: Pull to the right edge of the roadway and stop

Pull as close as possible to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway and stop, remaining stopped until the vehicle has passed.

Handbook p. 49 ↗
You are already inside a roundabout when an emergency vehicle approaches from behind with lights on. What should you do?
  1. Stop immediately inside the roundabout
  2. Pull over to the right inside the roundabout
  3. Speed up to exit before the emergency vehicle catches up
  4. Continue to your exit, then pull over

Answer: Continue to your exit, then pull over

If you are already in a roundabout when an emergency vehicle approaches, continue to your exit, leave the roundabout, and then pull over to the right.
