Warning signs tell you a hazard or special situation is ahead, so you can slow down before you reach it. You can spot them by color and shape: yellow, usually a diamond.

Know the rule

Warning signs are yellow with black lettering or symbols. Most are diamond shaped.

Handbook p. 26 ↗

Know the rule

Police, school crossing guards and other workers sometimes direct traffic with signs. Follow their directions even if they differ from the traffic light or sign.

Handbook p. 26 ↗

What these warning signs mean

  • Intersection / Cross Road: two or more roads cross ahead
  • Divided Highway: opposing traffic ahead is separated by a physical barrier, such as a guardrail
  • Slippery When Wet: the road ahead might be slippery; slow down
  • Signal Ahead: stop lights ahead; be ready to slow down and stop
  • Deer Crossing: deer are very likely to cross here; be alert
  • Sharp Turn (left or right arrow): be ready to slow down for the turn
  • Lane Ends (left or right): move to the other lane when it's safe

Put it into practice

You see a yellow diamond with a traffic light symbol on a 55 mph road. The signal itself is still out of sight. Ease off the gas now so you can stop smoothly if the light is red.
