Orange means work zone: people are working on or near the road, and the penalties go up. Green and brown signs are guide signs that point you to cities, exits, streets and attractions.

Know the rule

Construction signs are orange diamonds or rectangles with black lettering and symbols. They warn you about construction, maintenance or emergency workers on or near the road.

Guide signs you'll see

  • Destination: city, route and direction (e.g., I-94 West to Madison)
  • Exit: the arrow shows which side the exit lane is on
  • Roundabout Exits: which road you'll be on at each exit (e.g., right exit = East St)
  • Street Name: on almost every corner, atop a silver pole facing the road it names
  • Brown Destination: fun or beautiful places; some show miles to the location

You pass a ROAD WORK AHEAD 1 MILE sign and then see a flagger holding a sign. Slow down, put the phone away (only emergency calls are allowed here), and do exactly what the flagger signals. Fines are doubled in this zone.
