Ramp meters are small traffic signals on freeway entrance ramps that let cars merge one at a time. A diverging diamond interchange (DDI) is a special interchange design you simply follow by signs, signals and markings.

Metered ramp

A freeway entrance ramp with traffic signals that evenly space vehicles merging onto the freeway, reducing congestion on the freeway and the ramp.

Handbook p. 45 ↗

Know the rule

The ramp is metered when the “Ramp Metered When Flashing” sign is on.

Handbook p. 45 ↗

Know the rule

Pull completely up to the white stop line so your tires trigger the sensors in the pavement.

Handbook p. 45 ↗

Know the rule

Each lane has its own signal. When your signal turns green, go and merge with traffic.

Handbook p. 45 ↗

Know the rule

If you disobey a ramp signal, you can be ticketed.

Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI)

A special road design that guides drivers smoothly through exits and entrances. It improves safety, reduces crowding and lowers the cost of new roads.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Know the rule

At a DDI, follow the signs, signals and road markings.

Handbook p. 46 ↗

Put it into practice

You roll up an entrance ramp and the “Ramp Metered When Flashing” sign is blinking. Pull all the way up to the white stop line in your lane, wait for your own signal to turn green, then accelerate and merge.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

What is the purpose of a metered freeway entrance ramp?
  1. To collect a toll from drivers
  2. To count vehicles for road maintenance
  3. To close the ramp during rush hour
  4. To evenly space vehicles merging onto the freeway

Answer: To evenly space vehicles merging onto the freeway

Ramp meters space out merging vehicles to reduce congestion.

Handbook p. 45 ↗
How do you trigger the sensor at a metered ramp?
  1. Stop a car length behind the stop line
  2. Pull completely up to the white stop line
  3. Stop beside the Ramp Metered sign
  4. Wait on the shoulder next to the signal

Answer: Pull completely up to the white stop line

Pull completely up to the white stop line so the pavement sensor detects your tires.

Handbook p. 45 ↗
What happens if you disobey a ramp meter signal?
  1. You get a written warning only
  2. Nothing, ramp signals are only advisory
  3. You can be ticketed
  4. Only trucks can be ticketed

Answer: You can be ticketed

Disobeying a ramp signal can result in a ticket.

Handbook p. 45 ↗
How many traffic signals does a metered ramp typically have?
  1. No signals, only signs
  2. Two signals shared between all lanes
  3. Each lane has its own signal
  4. Only one signal for all lanes

Answer: Each lane has its own signal

Each lane at a metered ramp has its own traffic signal.

Handbook p. 45 ↗
What does a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) do?
  1. Guides drivers smoothly through exits and entrances
  2. Closes the interchange to all left turns
  3. Removes all traffic signals from exits and entrances
  4. Replaces the interchange with a roundabout

Answer: Guides drivers smoothly through exits and entrances

The handbook says a DDI guides drivers smoothly through different exits and entrances; follow its signs, signals and road markings.

Handbook p. 46 ↗
What is a benefit of a Diverging Diamond Interchange, according to the handbook?
  1. It allows higher speeds on the ramps
  2. It eliminates the need for signals
  3. It improves safety and reduces crowding
  4. It adds extra lanes for trucks

Answer: It improves safety and reduces crowding

A DDI helps with safety, reduces crowding and lowers construction costs.
