A 3-minute lesson from the West Virginia course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Vehicle-pedestrian collisions account for nearly 20% of traffic fatalities. Take extreme care near school zones, bus stops, playgrounds and parks, and know exactly when you must stop for a school bus.
Nearly 20%
Share of traffic fatalities from vehicle-pedestrian collisions
On all highways, streets, parking lots, private roads or driveways, traffic in BOTH directions must stop before reaching a school bus with red lights flashing that is loading or unloading students.
Later offenses bring bigger penalties. If the driver can't be identified, the vehicle's owner or lessee is guilty of a misdemeanor and subject to fines.
On a four-lane road with a center turn lane (no median), a school bus heading the other way stops and flashes red lights. You must stop too; only on an interstate with a median can opposite traffic keep going.
