Driver-assist technology can warn you and even brake or steer, but it never replaces you. The basics still matter: working brakes, a clear windshield, and wipers. Utah spells out which equipment every vehicle must have.
Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
Features that sense dangers and may alert you or adjust braking or steering, such as blind spot warning, backup camera, collision warning, automatic braking, and lane keeping.
Handbook p. 100 ↗Know the rule
Safety features assist you; they are not there to drive. Stay engaged, do head checks, and use mirrors and cameras. You are responsible for safe operation at all times.
Handbook p. 100 ↗Driving with safety features:
- Stay focused; driving is always your responsibility
- Read the owner's manual to learn how the features work and their limits
- Expect they may not work correctly in rain, snow, ice, fog, hills, and curves
- Keep vehicle sensors clean and undamaged
- Keep software current and follow the manufacturer's recommendations
Know the rule
You cannot use certain safety features, such as parking assist and cruise control, during your driving skills test.
Handbook p. 100 ↗Know the rule
All motor vehicles need brakes that meet federal standards on all wheels. A truck or truck tractor with three or more axles needs them on all wheels except the front.
Handbook p. 100 ↗Know the rule
With ABS brakes, don't pump them in a slippery situation. Apply constant, firm pressure for a smooth, safe stop.
Handbook p. 100 ↗Know the rule
A windshield is required on all vehicles except motorcycles. Keep it clear of dirt, frost, or anything else that blocks your view, such as items hanging from the rearview mirror.
Handbook p. 102 ↗Know the rule
Vehicles with windshields need at least one working wiper. If the vehicle came with two, both must work, and vehicles made after 1967 need wipers with two or more speeds.
Handbook p. 102 ↗Know the rule
Mud flaps or guards are required behind the rearmost wheels of any vehicle with a GVWR of 10,500 pounds or more, with altered suspension or tire size, or any trailer weighing 750 pounds or more empty. They must be at least as wide as the tires.
Handbook p. 101 ↗Know the rule
Owners must keep factory pollution control devices working as well as the original equipment. Propane vehicles are exempt if their emissions meet existing standards.
Handbook p. 102 ↗Know the rule
Fire extinguishers aren't required for all vehicles, but carrying at least one is recommended.
Handbook p. 101 ↗Put it into practice
Your car has lane keeping assistance and a backup camera. On a snowy canyon road you keep both hands on the wheel and still turn your head before backing, because these features may not work correctly in snow, on hills, or on curves.
