Road rage causes hundreds of injuries and deaths each year. It starts when a driver gets angry and stops following the rules. You can't control other drivers, but you can refuse to escalate and keep yourself calm.

Aggressive driving

Driving in a combative, forceful, or competitive manner.

Handbook p. 77 ↗

Know the rule

Aggressive driving occurs when a driver becomes angry or irritated and, as a result, fails to follow the rules of the road, sometimes intentionally aggravating others and causing injury, damage, or death.

Handbook p. 72 ↗

Tips to avoid road rage

  • Plan ahead and allow extra time for breakdowns, crashes, construction, or rush hour
  • In traffic, don't get angry; relax and listen to music you enjoy
  • Tap the horn if needed; don't hold it down, confront drivers, or make obscene gestures
  • Don't cut into another driver's lane; signal, change lanes safely, then cancel the signal
  • Don't slow down, slam on the brakes, or speed up to keep someone from passing or merging
  • Don't tailgate; follow at a safe distance
  • Drive friendly and report aggressive driving to local authorities
Handbook p. 72 ↗

Tailgate

To follow another vehicle too closely.

Handbook p. 81 ↗

Know the rule

Courtesy is one of your keys to safe driving: safety comes before the right-of-way.

Handbook p. 73 ↗

Know the rule

Proper signaling is another key: failing to signal is dangerous and inconsiderate.

Handbook p. 73 ↗

Put it into practice

A driver cuts you off and then brakes hard in front of you. Don't honk continuously, gesture, or speed around to retaliate. Back off to a safe following distance and, if the driving is dangerous, report it to local authorities when it's safe.
