Many newer vehicles have Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that sense conditions, spot dangers and may help you avoid a crash. They help you drive; they don't drive for you.

ADAS

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: safety features that sense and monitor conditions, identify dangers and may help you avoid a crash.

Handbook p. 52 ↗

Know the rule

ADAS features may give alerts such as sounds or vibration, or take control, such as adjusting braking or steering.

Handbook p. 52 ↗

Examples of ADAS features:

  • Blind spot warning
  • Back up camera
  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane keeping assistance
  • Active parking assist
Handbook p. 52 ↗

Know the rule

On your driving test you won't be allowed to use certain features, such as parking assist and cruise control.

Handbook p. 52 ↗

Know the rule

You remain responsible at all times: stay focused, do head checks, and use mirrors and cameras. Don't rely on safety features alone.

Handbook p. 53 ↗

Tips for vehicles with ADAS:

  • Always stay focused when driving
  • Read your owner's manual to learn how the features work
  • Know the features' limitations
  • They may not work properly in rain, snow, ice, fog, hills and curves
  • Keep vehicle sensors clean and damage free
  • Keep software up to date and follow the manufacturer's recommendations
Handbook p. 53 ↗

Put it into practice

Your car has lane keeping assistance, and you're driving through heavy rain on a curvy road. The system may not work properly in those conditions, so keep both hands on the wheel and steer yourself.
