For an original driving privilege, DMV tests your vision, your knowledge of the rules and your driving skill. Most DMV offices give tests. The knowledge test covers road signs, traffic laws and other things a driver needs to know, and this manual contains everything needed to pass it.

Know the rule

Every time you take a test, you must first pay the test fee (separately from any other fees) and present proof of identity, date of birth and current residence address.

Handbook p. 9 ↗

Vision test facts

  • There is no fee for the vision test
  • Pass it wearing glasses or contacts and your privilege will show corrective lenses are required
  • If you fail, DMV gives you a form to take to a licensed vision specialist

Testing in a DMV office

  • Only people being tested and authorized translators may be in the testing area
  • The test is on a touch-screen, in several languages, with or without audio; you may bring earbuds
  • No DMV manual, electronic devices or notes; a paper foreign-language dictionary is OK with permission
  • Fail? You may retest the same day, depending on the office's testing resources
  • Need a special accommodation? Contact your local office
Handbook p. 10 ↗

Cheating

Talking, writing or note taking, cell phone use, using any electronic device, or letting someone else test for you. You fail and can't test again for 90 days.

Handbook p. 10 ↗

Testing online

  • Use a desktop or laptop with keyboard, mouse and webcam — not a phone or tablet
  • A photo is taken at the start, and random photos during the test confirm your identity
  • Under 18? A proctor over 21 must supervise, and a proctor can supervise only two tests in 24 hours
  • No DMV manual, other electronic devices or notes
  • Available in several languages, with or without audio help

Put it into practice

You fail the online test twice this morning. You've used your two attempts for this 24-hour period, so wait before trying again online. If your fourth online attempt also fails, your next try must be at a DMV office.
