A 3-minute lesson from the Oregon course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
The drive test shows you can handle a car and follow traffic rules, signs and signals. It covers turning, backing up, parking, lane changes, speed control, signaling, vehicle control and general driving. The examiner sits in the front seat, gives directions and goes over your results afterward.
DMV may waive the drive test if:
You're a new resident surrendering an out-of-state license that is valid or expired less than one year
DMV receives proof you completed an ODOT-Approved Driver Education Course within the past two years
Drive tests are by appointment only. Bring a passenger vehicle with current registration and valid proof of insurance. No proof of insurance before the test means you must reschedule.
Schedule at DMV2U.Oregon.gov or 503-945-5000, ideally a minimum of three weeks ahead. A certified Third Party drive tester can often schedule sooner, but testing may cost more.
On test day your brake light is out. The car fails the examiner's equipment check, so your test is rescheduled. Check every light, the horn and the tires the day before.
Check your understanding
