A 3-minute lesson from the Oregon course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Children are unpredictable: they dart out from between cars and play behind vehicles. Around homes, parks and schools, slow down and look actively for them. Oregon uses three kinds of school speed signs, each with its own rule for when 20 mph applies.
Where children play
Be extra careful in residential areas and places like parks
Don't drive too close to parked cars that may block your view
Be watchful when backing in or out of a driveway — children may be behind your vehicle
A section of road next to a school or school crosswalk, marked by signs. A yellow, five-sided sign marks the beginning of the zone and warns of school crossings.
It's Saturday at 10 a.m. You pass a SCHOOL SPEED LIMIT 20 WHEN CHILDREN ARE PRESENT sign and see two kids waiting at the crosswalk. The 20 mph limit applies — this sign works any day, any time children are present.
