Most expressway mistakes happen at the edges: merging in, getting off, or stopping on the shoulder. Plan your entrance, direction and exit ahead of time, keep a following cushion, and never make last-minute moves.

Avoid collisions: drive with caution

  • Plan your entrance, direction and exit as far as possible
  • Stay 3 seconds behind the vehicle in front; allow 4 seconds in bad weather
  • Watch 15-20 seconds ahead for cars braking, entering and exiting
  • Observe all highway signs; move to the exit lane as early as possible
Handbook p. 34 ↗

Handbook p. 34 ↗

Know the rule

Never turn around on the expressway. Do not, under any conditions, cross the median or divider to turn around on a controlled-access highway; drive to the next exit, get off, and re-enter going the other way.

Handbook p. 34 ↗

Entering the expressway:

  • Yield to vehicles already on the expressway
  • Enter in the acceleration lane and stay to the right; adjust your speed and watch the traffic
  • Signal left and, when it's safe, merge into the proper lane
  • Move into the right lane only when a break in traffic lets you enter without disrupting the flow
  • Don't enter the lanes at a sharp angle
Handbook p. 34 ↗

Leaving the expressway:

  • Move to the proper lane well before the exit, especially in heavy traffic
  • Keep up with the flow of traffic until you reach the exit
  • Signal right at least 100 feet before the exit
  • Slow down in the deceleration lane or exit ramp until you reach the posted speed; check your speedometer
Handbook p. 34 ↗
100 feet

Minimum distance before the exit to signal right

Handbook p. 34 ↗

Know the rule

Don't slow down on the expressway itself before exiting; slow down after turning into the deceleration lane. Don't make a last-minute turnoff, and check the posted safe speed for the ramp.

Handbook p. 34 ↗

Breakdowns and emergency stops:

  • Signal, then pull off to the extreme right shoulder away from moving traffic
  • Turn on your emergency flashers
  • When out of your car, never walk near the roadway; keep children away from traffic
Handbook p. 34 ↗

Put it into practice

You miss your exit. Don't brake, back up or cut across the median. Continue to the next exit, get off, and re-enter the expressway in the other direction.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.
