Once your hours are done, you take a two-part skills test: a maneuverability course marked by cones, then an on-road drive with an examiner. Knowing exactly what's checked takes the surprise out of test day.

Know the rule

Schedule the driving test online at www.ohiodrivingtest.com or in person at a Driver Exam Station. Designated Testing Locations may collect fees to cover the cost of the skills test.

Handbook p. 45 ↗

Before the test, you and your vehicle must meet these conditions:

  • Present your TIPIC
  • Provide a vehicle in good condition
  • Turn signals, brake lights, horn, windshield wipers and headlights must work (checked by inspection)
  • Front doors must open from the inside and outside with the door handle
  • Registration must be current and displayed on the license plate
  • Automated assistance tools, such as automated parking, must be disabled

Handbook p. 45 ↗

Points are deducted for:

  • Stopping
  • Bumping markers
  • Misjudging stopping distance
  • Not being parallel with the test area
Handbook p. 45 ↗

Immediate failure:

  • Running over or knocking down a marker
  • Removing a marker from the designated area
  • Other dangerous actions
Handbook p. 45 ↗

Step one — forward:

  • Drive forward through the course; measurements are taken from the center marker
  • The examiner directs you to steer to the right or left of the center marker
  • Steer straight and stop when your rear bumper is even with the center marker, parallel with the course

Step two — reverse:

  • Back up past the center marker and straighten the vehicle
  • Continue back through the course and stop with the front bumper even with the two rear markers
  • Leave the course without running over markers or any other disqualifying action
Handbook p. 46 ↗

Maneuverability step two: reverse back through the course

On-road test — the examiner rides in the front passenger seat and assesses:

  • Stopping and starting
  • Turning around and backing up
  • Performing turns
  • Using turn signals
  • Driving in the correct lane
  • Keeping a safe following distance

Put it into practice

During step one you creep forward and your bumper nudges a cone without knocking it over. That costs points. If the cone had gone down, or you had run over it, the test would end as an immediate failure.

Check your understanding

Read the question, decide on an answer, then open it to check the explanation. These are Roadwise study questions based on the source handbook.

  2. 10 feet by 25 feet
  3. 8 feet by 18 feet
  4. 12 feet by 20 feet
