Turning correctly
A 3-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Good turns start early. Check both ways for traffic and pedestrians, signal for the last 100 feet, and get into the correct position before the intersection. Where you start and end a turn depends on whether each road is one-way or two-way.
Know the rule
For any turn, check both ways for traffic and pedestrians, and signal continuously for the last 100 feet before the turn.
Two-way onto one-way: approach with your left wheels close to the centerline, turn before reaching the center of the intersection, and enter the left lane of the one-way road.
Two-way onto a four-lane highway: approach with your left wheels close to the centerline and turn into the passing lane. When traffic permits, move right, out of the passing lane.
You're on a two-way street turning left onto a four-lane highway. Keep your left wheels near the centerline, yield to oncoming traffic, and turn into the passing lane. Once traffic permits, signal and move to the right lane.
