North Dakota driving lesson · Right-of-Way & Speed
Speed limits
A 3-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Speed limits are maximums for ideal conditions, not targets. North Dakota sets default limits by type of road that apply unless another limit is posted. Weather, traffic or a blocked view can require you to go slower.
Maximum speed limit
The highest speed allowed, meant only for ideal driving conditions. Conditions may require you to drive slower than the posted limit.
Never drive faster than the posted speed limit or than conditions allow. Authorities may also post minimum speed limits when needed for the safe movement of traffic.
The 20 mph school limit applies when you pass a school during recess, or while children are going to or leaving school during its opening or closing hours.
A snowstorm hits while you're on a rural Interstate posted at 80 mph, and you can barely see the lane lines. The 80 mph limit is for ideal conditions only. Slow to a speed that lets you see and stop safely.
