DUI court penalties, crashes & insurance
A 3-minute lesson from the North Dakota course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
If you're convicted in court, losing your license is only part of it. North Dakota sets mandatory fines and jail time that climb with each offense, adds jail time when someone is hurt or killed, and requires proof of insurance.
All convicted offenders must take a mandatory alcohol addiction evaluation and complete any recommended treatment. These are only the minimum penalties.
If you refuse an AC test or are convicted of DUI, you must show proof of financial responsibility (SR 22 insurance coverage). Your yearly insurance rates could double or even triple.
A driver convicted of DUI five years ago is convicted again. That's a second conviction within seven years: a $1,000 fine, 10 days in jail, and at least 12 months in the 24/7 Sobriety Program.
