A 3-minute lesson from the New Mexico course. Read the rules and examples, follow the handbook page references, and check your understanding before you move on.
Anyone who drives on New Mexico public roads needs a driver license, and residents must hold a New Mexico license. If you're under 18, you start in the graduated driver license (GDL) system and move up one level at a time.
The first level is the instructional permit, often called a learner's permit. It lets you practice, but only with a qualified supervisor beside you.
Under 18, you must stay in the graduated license system until you meet the requirements for an unrestricted license. The driver ed course must be approved by the Traffic Safety Bureau.
In every vehicle except a motorcycle, the licensed supervisor sits in the right front seat. On a motorcycle, the licensed driver must follow the learner.
Your 20-year-old cousin, licensed for four years, offers to ride with you. Not allowed: a supervisor must be at least 21. Your 45-year-old aunt, licensed for decades and sitting in the right front seat, qualifies.
